What “registered cottage kitchen” actually means

You'll see "Registered Cottage Kitchen" at the top of my website, and I've realised that probably doesn't mean much unless you already know.

So here's the plain version.

It means I'm registered with the state

Nebraska has what's called a cottage food law. It lets people like me bake in our own home kitchens and sell what we make, as long as we're registered to do it.

That's what I am. Registered, above board, doing this properly.

What it doesn't mean

It doesn't mean a commercial building with stainless steel everywhere and a loading dock. My kitchen is on Old Mill Road and it looks like a kitchen, because it is one.

That's not a limitation I'm apologising for. It's the whole point. Your cake is made by one person, in a real kitchen, in the same town you live in.

The honest part

Because it's a home kitchen, I have to be straight with you about allergies.

Nuts, dairy, eggs and wheat are all used in my kitchen. I can't promise you a genuinely allergen-free cake, and I won't pretend otherwise — it matters too much to be vague about.

If someone eating the cake has an allergy, tell me up front. I'll tell you honestly what I can and can't do, and we'll go from there.

Pickup is here in Albion, at the kitchen. For weddings and larger tiered cakes, ask about delivery and setup — it's usually doable around the area.
