A cake fit for a little princess: Reese turns 4

Reese asked for princesses. Not one — all of them.

The skirts are the cake

This is the part I like best about how this one came together. The princesses themselves are flat cutouts, and they stop at the waist.

Everything below that is piped straight onto the cake in buttercream: a full ruffled skirt for each one, flaring out and gathering as it falls, in her own color. Cinderella's blue, Belle's yellow, Snow White's yellow with the blue bodice above it, Ariel's green, Aurora's pink and Jasmine's mint.

They're piped in place, in position on the cake, so each skirt has to sit right against its neighbour without crowding it. Four stand shoulder to shoulder along the top and two more come down the front.

Everything else stays out of the way

Behind them is a gold glitter castle, tall and spiky and catching the light — that's what makes the whole thing read as a fairytale rather than six dolls on a cake.

The buttercream is the softest pink, with rosettes and little stars piped in pink, lavender and grey filling the gaps between the skirts. Gold sugar pearls are dotted through them. Her name in gold script sits across the front, with a gold 4 beside it.

Six princesses is a lot to fit on one cake. The pale pink underneath is what keeps it from tipping over into chaos.
