Classic white and baby's breath: the Aschoff wedding

There's something so timeless about a classic white wedding cake, and this one didn't need much doing to it.

The cake in the photographs

Two tiers, white buttercream, combed into even horizontal ridges the whole way around. No fondant, no piping, no color. Just texture and light.

Baby's breath cascades diagonally from the top tier down across the bottom one, gathered thick at the top and thinning as it falls — so it looks like it landed there rather than being arranged.

A black The Aschoffs topper sits up top, and the whole thing stands on a wooden round with Aschoff · 8·8·26 spelled out in front of it.

The ten cakes nobody photographs

Here's the part people don't see. Behind that tiered cake there were ten full sheet cakes, all in white buttercream with quilted lattice piped across the tops and scalloped borders round the edges.

That's how a wedding actually gets fed. The tiered cake is for the photographs and the cutting; the sheet cakes are what comes out on plates. Making them match matters more than it sounds — the same white, the same finish, so nobody feels like they got the second-best cake.

What's inside

The wedding cake: chocolate with vanilla buttercream frosting.

The sheet cakes: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, all with vanilla buttercream frosting — plus Oreo and carrot with cream cheese frosting.

Six flavors between them, so there was something for everybody.

Congratulations

To the new Mr. & Mrs. Aschoff — a lifetime of love, laughter and happily ever after.
